The Georgia Ports Authority is committed to staying ahead of the competition through development of leading-edge technology, marketing and operations to move cargo faster. GPA constantly identifies new ways of sustaining growth, performance and security.
Georgia’s deepwater ports in Savannah and Brunswick, together with inland terminals in Chatsworth, Bainbridge and Columbus, are critical conduits through which raw materials and finished products flow to and from destinations globally. Major commodity groups include retail shipments, refrigerated cargo, cars and machinery, bulk and breakbulk cargo.
Offering unmatched connectivity to Interstates 95 and 16, the Port of Savannah is the single largest and fastest-growing container terminal in America. Meanwhile, the Port of Brunswick is the nation’s second busiest hub for autos and machinery. GPA plans to expand Savannah’s container capacity by 60 percent by 2025. Savannah’s Garden City Terminal is already the South Atlantic region’s busiest intermodal gateway, handling 38 trains per week of import and export cargo. A major infrastructure development, the Mason Mega Rail project, is now the largest intermodal rail facility for a port authority in North America.
Other GPA terminals, including Ocean Terminal in Savannah, as well as the Brunswick terminals of Mayor’s Point and Colonel’s Island, also provide direct rail service. The Colonel’s Island auto port offers links via CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern to destinations in the Midwest, Gulf states and across the country to California. The Class I railroads connect to the Myd Harris Rail Yard on Colonel’s Island via the Golden Isles Terminal Railroad, which provides all rail switching services on Colonel’s Island.
